I’ve been running around like a small-time Zarathustra proclaiming the death of liberalism for almost a decade. Now said death has gone mainstream-ish and Samuel Moyn has written a response to Patrick Deneen’s Why Liberalism Failed that argues that it is “Cold War Liberalism” that has failed, and that what we need to do is reach back to the 19thC and beyond to find the sources of liberal hope/utopianism and make a new liberalism. I’m hardly convinced but I am cogitating confusedly.
